#15 You Won’t Relent (Breaking Dawn spoiler/teaser)

I was at church today (Sunday), and they played Misty Edwards’ “You Won’t Relent”. I’ve heard it before, but today I really connected with the lyrics.  I found this video on youtube, for those of you who haven’t heard it:

I felt it could serve as a good descriptor of several points of symbolism within book four of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn.

The storyline follows (symbolically) our choice to endure purification by God, and die to our flesh. The scene in the book I’m talking about is something Scripture identifies as the refiner’s fire of God, when it says:

18“Son of man, the house of Israel has become (A)dross to Me; all of them are (B)bronze and tin and iron and lead in the (C)furnace; they are the dross of silver. 19“Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Because all of you have become dross, therefore, behold, I am going to gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. 20‘As they gather silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into the (D)furnace to blow fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in My anger and in My wrath and I will lay you there and melt you. 21‘I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted in the midst of it. Ezekiel 22:18-21.

He does this not to punish us, punishment was paid for by Christ. But this is discipline to purify us, so that Christ receives us as the reward for His suffering.

When the burning takes place, it must be voluntary and not under coercion, as in the book, it must be for love that we submit to the death process. I was so impacted by the image of the “flames” burning away Bella’s humanity as she became immortal. It became so clear to me that this process is divine, horrific, terrible, and glorious, all at the same time. Divine, because it does come from God; horrific, because our flesh becomes a burnt offering before the Lord; terrible because it should cause us to be afraid as it is a great cost to us, however one our love for the Lord causes us to make; and glorious, because it results in oneness with Christ…something otherwise impossible to obtain.

As in Breaking Dawn there is so much to be seen with our “new eyes” and new senses. Things the Lord has always intended to share with us, but is unable to due to our fallen flesh. When Bella opens her eyes and sees Edward again with her strong and perfect eyes, she is again dazzled by his beauty as if “she had never seen him before.” What we believe we’ve seen of the Lord, experienced in His presence, and heard from His lips is nothing compared to what He truly is. Much like Edward, He must hold back from us until we are “strong and unbreakable,” because noone can look upon the Lord and live….It’s important to note that when He said that to Moses, it wasn’t a threat…it was a lament. The Lord wants to be known, and to return to unbroken fellowship with us, but to reveal all of His Glory to us now would literally kill us. I know, what a way to go, but He has too much for us to accomplish here before that day comes.

  1. Sarah, it’s so comforting to me to read this and know that someone else sees these lessons/symbols in Twilight the same way I do. From Edward putting Bella back together after the baby is born through her waking up – it’s my favorite part of the entire series b/c it is so evident in my mind that it’s a powerful picture of the working of the Holy Spirit. And I love what you said about God’s glory – that it is a lament to Him that it would kill us and that He longs to be known. Ah! I could go on and on – but what an inspiring way to start my day. Thank you! Good stuff. Write on!
